On 8 & 9 November 2024, all Berliners and visitors to the city are invited to take a leisurely stroll along the path of the former Berlin Wall and enjoy the multifaceted programme we’ve created. To find out exactly where the event area is located, visit the main page. 

The programme of events offered on 8 & 9 November along the route is being organised and implemented by Kulturprojekte Berlin in cooperation with a number of different partners.

Getting to the site on 8 & 9 November 2024

We highly recommend that you make your way to the site via public transport, by bicycle or on foot. We strongly advise against traveling by car due to various road closures and very limited parking options in the vicinity of the site. Please also note that public transport services might be impacted due to the increased number of visitors making their way to the area.

The event route is located in the public space in central Berlin. All relevant legal provisions pertaining to public spaces therefore apply.

Accessibility

All events and festivities are taking place outdoors in the public urban space in Berlin. Please note that sidewalks, certain sections of pavement and other parts of the route may not be fully accessible for wheelchair users. The same applies to public transport stops in the vicinity. Please consult the local public transport companies for more information on barrier-free access to the site.

What are the opening hours along the route?

The route itself will be accessible all day long on both event days, Friday 8 November and Saturday 9 November 2024.

Where are the festivities marking the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Wall taking place?

The festivities are taking place on a roughly 4-kilometre route along the path of the former Berlin Wall between Invalidenstraße and Axel-Springer-Straße. If you’d like to see the exact route, visit 8–9 November. Please note that there will be regular motor traffic parallel to the route in some sections.

How can I get to the event?

  • Use public transport to arrive at the following stops:
    • Berlin Central Station (regional and long-distance trains, S3, S5, S7, S9, U5, bus 120, 123, 142, 147, 245, M41, M85, N5, N20, N40)
    • Brandenburger Tor (S1, S2, S25, S26, U5, Bus 100)
    • Potsdamer Platz (regional transport, S1, S2, S25, S26 and U2, bus 200, 300, M48, M85)
    • U Kochstr./ Checkpoint Charlie (U6, bus M29)
    • Lindenstr./ Oranienstr. (Bus 248, M29)
    • The transport companies will provide information about barrier-free access.
  • By bicycle:
    • Access to the festivities & the open-air installation is possible by bike on the designated cycle paths – you will have to push along the route. Additional bicycle parking spaces will be set up for the festivities at the following locations:
      • Futurium (under the bridge)
      • Brandenburg Gate
      • Lennéstraße
      • Checkpoint Charlie (Friedrichstraße)
      • Markgrafenstraße/Charlottenstraße
  • By car:
    • We highly recommend that you avoid traveling to the event by car and instead use public transport or take your bike.

Are the event sites barrier-free and inclusive?

Access to the event area along the former course of the Wall between Invalidenstraße and Axel-Springer-Straße is barrier-free. Historical films with sign language interpretation will be shown on the video cubes along the route during the day.

For the Festival for Freedom on the evening of November 9, the songs will be subtitled so that everyone can sing along. There will also be sign language interpretation at the Brandenburg Gate.

When are the festivities marking the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall taking place?

On Friday 8 November and Saturday 9 November from 8 am to 10 pm on both days.

How long will the festivities marking the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Wall last?

The open-air installation, including a historical exhibition and multimedia offerings, can be experienced on November 8-9, 2024. On 9 November, there will also be a varied program along the route. In the evening, the Festival for Freedom will be celebrated from 8 pm. On November 10, part of the open-air installation will be shown on the Campus of Democracy at the former headquarters .

Does it cost anything to attend the events?

No, the event and the open-air program along the route are free of charge.

What kind of events are on the programme?

On Saturday 9 November there will be a variety of events at several locations along the route, including music, talks, interviews, performances, karaoke and staged readings. On that evening, starting at 8 pm, the Fest für Freiheit (Festival for Freedom) will take place featuring a performance by the Band für Freiheit (Band for Freedom). Where can I find more information about the programme, the open- air installation and guided tours along the event route?

There will be three “Info points” set up along the route: one each at the Futurium, Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie. When you visit one of these Info points, you’ll be able to pick up a guide with a map and information on the various events. The programme will also be listed in detail at each of these locations. Our own information staff will also be present at various points along the route. They will be happy to provide you with information and answer any questions you might have.

Where can I pick up a copy of the free book commemorating the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall?

Along the route at the three locations at the info points, via mobile distribution teams and at the additional book boxes, where you can get the book for the anniversary free of charge. A detailed list of the distribution points and respective opening hours on November 8 and 9 can be found on the book page and from November 10, 2024 also at the Campus for Democracy at the former Stasi headquarters!

Is the book available in any language other than German?

Yes, the book is available in an English edition as well.

What is the exhibition “Der Weg zur Freiheit” (The Path to Freedom) about? What themes does it explore?

The exhibition is divided up into seven sections, each oriented towards a specific theme: Opposition & Protest, Revolutions in Eastern Europe, Escape & Emigration, Media & The Public Eye, Demonstrations & Participation, The Fall of the Wall, and Democracy & Unification. Each section is found at a different location along the path of the open-air installation.

Is the exhibition in any language other than German?

Yes, in addition to the existing pubic restaurants, snack bars, cafés and supermarkets along the route, there will be a few additional food and drinks stands: Friday 8 November: from 2 pm to 10 pm and Saturday 9 November from 12 noon to 10 pm

What can and/or should I (not) bring to the event area?

We expect a large number of people to attend the events on 8 & 9 November, so we ask that you refrain from bringing any bulky items or sharp objects. We recommend that you bring a reusable drinking bottle or two.

Can I bring my children along to the event area?

We look forward to your visit with children. Please note that there may be large gatherings of people and therefore the use of baby carriages may be more difficult. Please also take a look at the special children’s program in the children’s tent on Ebertstraße.

Are we allowed to take photos and videos of the events?

Yes, just like in any other public space, you are permitted to take photos and videos for private use. Please note: We would be delighted if you decided to share your photos and videos with us using the hashtag #mauerfall35 and #haltetdiefreiheithoch!
Please also note that photos and videos will be taken during the event.

Where can I find information about potential road closures and blocked-off streets?

Information on all road closures and blocked-off streets can be found here (in German language only). We informed local residents in advance about any closures that would impact their areas.

If I’m in need of help or support in the event area, where should I go?

Along the route, you can contact mobile teams and staff at the Info points if you have any questions or problems. There are also QR codes at the Info points and book boxes that you can use to contact a specially trained awareness team. The team can provide preventative help or first aid in the event of an assault.

We want all visitors to have an experience free from discrimination in any form and aggressive or disrespectful behavior. We stand for open, tolerant and respectful interaction with one another. Violations will not be tolerated and may lead to exclusion from the event. The instructions of the organizers and security personnel must be followed.
