Reading in the presence of contemporary witness and tunnel builder Winfried Schweitzer: In his historical novel “Tunnel der Mutigen”, Christian Hardinghaus tells the incredible story of a spectacular escape from the GDR through an illegal tunnel. Berlin, October 3 and 4, 1964: A total of 57 people flee through the 145-metre-long “Tunnel 57” in Bernauer Strasse under the Berlin Wall to West Berlin. The story of the tunnel and the death of border guard Egon Schultz on the second night of the escape became world-famous. To mark the 60th anniversary of the events, the Berlin Wall Foundation and Berliner Unterwelten e.V. are inviting you to a special program of events.
