Since the Wall was built in 1961, there have been many attempts to cross under the deadly barriers and thus reach freedom. In total, more than 70 escape tunnel projects were started, but only 19 of them were successful. Over 300 GDR citizens made their way through them to West Berlin. During the tour, we tell the story(s) of the escape tunnels, the ghost stations and their seemingly perfect protection against “border violators” as well as the blocking of the sewers. After a visit to the Blochplatz civil defense facility, the tour continues to Bernauer Strasse, the focal point of the construction of the Wall and the escape tunnels. In the historic vaults of the former Oswald-Berliner brewery, we report on the two most successful and spectacular projects from the time of the Berlin Wall, “Tunnel 29” and “Tunnel 57”. As a highlight, we will show an original escape tunnel from 1970/71, which is accessible via a 30-meter-long visitor tunnel.
Burkhart Veigel, one of the most successful escape helpers, will talk about some of his escape help actions, especially about the tunnels in Heidelberger Straße, the sewers and his trick tours with passports and converted cars.

Tickets are available from 30 days in advance and cost 26 euros.
