For five weeks, the Berlin Wall Foundation collected the memories and perspectives of people in Berlin on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Peaceful Revolution. On 9 November 2024, selected videos will be projected onto the back of the East Side Gallery. On this evening, the voices will look back on 1989, when people worked together to bring down the dictatorship in the GDR – with demonstrations, opposition work, embassy occupations, applications to leave the country and more.
They are a reminder of the unique break that brought freedom, democracy and the rule of law to a united Germany. They paint a picture of the years that followed, in which new opportunities and possibilities presented themselves, but people were also marginalised and hostile, lost their jobs, saw their businesses close and had to reinvent their lives or livelihoods. And they paint a picture of today: how can we preserve democracy together?
